Why The Defenders is only the 3rd best Marvel/Netflix TV show

NETFLIX

Here is the Definitive Ranking of MARVEL/NETFLIX original TV shows:-

1.     Jessica Jones

NETFLIX
There are so many reasons why Jessica Jones season 1 is the best MARVEL/NETFLIX original series. Firstly, Jessica Jones is the Anti-Superhero we all want. She doesn’t care about being a hero but finds herself thrust into a role perfected by Krysten Ritter. She drinks and swears lot, with the personality of a female Wolverine (X-men) or Hancock. She physically looks barely strong enough to hold a steel door open much less knock it off the hinges. She doesn’t care about anyone but herself, which is refreshingly compared to the other MARVEL superheroes that make up the MCU. Most importantly Jessica Jones is my highest rated MARVEL/NETFLIX original because of the villain (Kilgrave). With his terrifying mind control he toys with Jessica, laving the audience left to wonder if the hero can really overcome this mind spell.

2.     Daredevil (Season 1)

NETFLIX
Daredevil season 1 totally revamped the failed attempt to bring daredevil to life by Ben Affleck in the 2003 movie. Charlie Cox expertly encapsulates the inner turmoil of Daredevil. The most enthralling aspect of Daredevil is that his utter mortality is always on display. Despite his evident vulnerabilities, Daredevil excels at his quest to protect Hell’s Kitchen. Daredevil shines as we get to watch Rupert Murdoch’s character develop from sweater wearing vigilante to a red suited hero. The villain Wilson Fisk, played by Vincent D’onofrio, exclaims why every superhero feature is only as good as its villain.

3.     The Defenders

NETFLIX
Several people are going to be mad about The Defenders being ranked higher than Luke Cage. However as an ensemble, The Defenders cast shines. Without being a spoiler, The Defenders tackles the MARVEL version of the illuminati known as THE HAND. The best part of the defenders is that it provides a sense of high purpose to the individual super hero stories while inter weaving the roles of these heroes in the smaller Marvel Universe focused in New YorK City. Sigorney Weaver shines in her role although her absence leaves us with some questions. The Defenders improves upon the deficiencies of the Fist and provides a sense of purpose for Luke Cage.

4.     Luke Cage

NETFLIX
I loved almost everything about Luke Cage, except the character Luke Cage. The soundtrack was awesome; the focus on Harlem and its evident role in the black community was superb. Even the colloquial hint of a hooded hero provided a refreshing contrast to societal subtext. However Luke Cage the character fell a bit flat. Don’t get me wrong; having a Black Super Hero was awesome. There were two problems with the character Luke Cage. Firstly he lacked a mean/vicious streak that is more evident in the likes of Jessica Jones and Daredevil. Furthermore his personality is not what you would expect from a black man unjustly locked up for several years. Secondly, the problem with having an indestructible superhero is that you never really get a sense that he is in danger and thus dilutes the intensity. Special mention to the fantastic cast including Mahershala Ali, Simone Missick and Alfre Woodard.

5.     Dare Devil (Season 2)

NETFLIX

After the major fist pump that was Daredevil Season 1, Season 2 came in a bit lackluster. There were some positive aspects including the extent of understanding we obtain about how Murdoch becomes Daredevil. The emergence of The Punisher and Elektra really amp up the stakes however, we are left feeling incomplete with the fate of either character. Daredevil suffered from the goal of setting up coming features in the MARVEL universe.

6.     Iron Fist

NETFLIX

Iron fist was a thoroughly disappoint affair. It was the first MARVEL/NETFLIX series I felt like stopping md way through and at the end I felt like I could have missed entirely. The best part of Iron First is Jessica Henwick. In he end Iron Fist suffers from a totally forgettable main character. There is some promise in the Iron Fist saga (as seen by The DEFENDERS) which we hope MARVEL can unlock in the future.
